2012 marked AWID’s 30th Anniversary

This anniversary celebration has been particularly reaffirming for AWID as we strive to fulfill our mission of “strengthening the voice, impact and influence of women’s rights advocates, organizations and movements internationally to effectively advance the rights of women.” We are very encouraged that AWID’s role is increasingly recognized from both within and beyond the women’s movement as that of spearheading alliances, promoting innovative monitoring and evaluation tools from a feminist perspective, contributing participatory research and resources that helps to catalyze action to combat religious fundamentalisms and protect women human right defenders, strategizing and documenting alternative frameworks to aid and development ‘global blueprints,’ and mobilizing across sectors to advance women’s rights and gender equality.

In its 30-year history, AWID has grown from a volunteer organization for US ‘WID’ specialists to become a truly global women’s human rights organization, with significant presence and membership all around the world, especially in the global South. Many individuals and organizations from our membership and broader constituency have contributed to AWID reaching this important milestone. We celebrate them and their contributions here.
